Song des Tages: Birds Of Tokyo – „Two Of Us“

Dass man hierzulande kaum je von Birds Of Tokyo gehört hat, könnte unterschiedliche Gründe haben. Zum einen liegen Deutschland und Perth, die Heimat der fünfköpfigen Aussie-Band, knappe, schlappe 14.000 Kilometer entfernt. Gilt in Zeiten von Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music und Co. nicht als Argument? Fair enough. Nichtsdestotrotz legen Ian Kenny, Adam Spark, Adam Weston, Ian Berney und Glenn Sarangapany seit Bandgründung vor gut 15 Jahren ihr Hauptaugenmerk auf den heimischen Musikmarkt – und das auch, schenkt man mehrfachen Auszeichungen mit diversen nationalen Awards sowie etlichen Gold- und Platin-Verleihungen Glauben, recht erfolgreich. Trotz alledem sind selbst Karnivool, die zweite Band von Frontmann Ian Kenny, bei der er (und das sogar bereits seit den späten Neunzigern) alternative-proggend am Mikro steht, in good ol‘ Europe bekannter…

Und: Es darf berechtigterweise bezweifelt werden, dass sich daran mit dem Erscheinen ihres neuen, sechsten Studioalbums „Human Design“ im April etwas ändern wird. Das liegt schon allein am Musikalischen, denn den radiopoppigen Alternative Rock, den Birds Of Tokyo im Gros anbieten, bekommt man im schlimmst-nichtssagendsten Fall auch von Formatpop-Retorten wie Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots, The Script oder Thirty Second To Mars geliefert. Erfreuliche Ausnahmen wie der 2016er Vorgänger „Brace„, welcher unter der Ägide von Produzent David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, Silverchair) ungewöhnlich heavy und angenehm unpoppig ausfiel, bestätigen leider selten die Regel (Interessierten sei ungeachtet davon die 2015 veröffentlichte Best Of „Playlist“ empfohlen).

Eines muss man Ian Kenny und seinen Bandkumpanen jedoch zugute halten: sie wissen im Zweifelsfall, wie man einen guten Ohrwurm hinbekommt. Man höre etwa „Two Of Us“, ein triumphales, über beide Backen grinsendes Liebeslied, das Keyboarder Glenn Sarangapany als eine dreieinhalbminütige „celebration of finally finding your happy place“ beschreibt und das – neben einem nicht zu überhörenden jubilierenderen Gospelchor – ein kreativ abgedrehtes One-Shot-Musikvideo zu bieten hat, bei dem die Band Unterstützung von Regisseur Zac Lynch-Woodlock bekam. Eine schöner, durch und durch positiv gestimmter Kontrast zu anderen Albumvorboten wie dem theatralisch überladenen Heartbreak-Banger „Good Lord„, die unlängst noch weitaus weniger gut in den Gehörgängen haften blieben…
