Bei allem, was Amanda Palmer an kreativem Output veröffentlicht – und das ist nicht gerade wenig – kann man sich meist sicher sein, dass am Ende erneut große – oft genug sogar großartige und vor allem wichtige – Kunst ums Eck lugen wird. (Das im Mai gemeinsam mit The Legendary Pink Dots-Frontmann Edward Ka-Spel veröffentlichte Album „I Can Spin A Rainbow“ lassen wir an dieser Stelle mal außen vor und verbuchen es unter „Erfüllung eines persönlichen Jugendtraums“…)
Dass sich die 41-jährige US-Musikerin ihres Einflusses und ihrer Außenwirkung durchaus bewusst ist und diese auch nutzt, um oftmals kritische Töne anzustimmen, dürfte längst bekannt sein. Das neuste, nun veröffentlichte Charity-Stück „In Harm’s Way“ ist ein weiterer Beleg dafür.
Inspiration für den Song war ein Foto der türkische Pressefotografin Nilüfer Demir, welches den syrischen Flüchtlingsjungen Aylan Kurdi, tot an einem Strand nahe der türkischen Touristenhochburg Bodrum, zeigte. Das Bild ging im September 2015 um die Welt und erreichte auch Amanda Palmer, die zu diesem Zeitpunkt kurz vor der Geburt ihres ersten Kindes stand. Und es ließ die werdende Mutter nicht mehr los. Also setzte sie sich, wenig später, nachdem ihr Sohn Ash zur Welt gekommen war, an ihr Piano und skizzierte einen ersten Entwurf des Stückes „In Harm’s Way“ (welcher zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch „The Refugee’s Brother“ hieß).
Kurz darauf stieß Palmer via Twitter auf den spanischen Performance-Künstler Abel Azcona. Beeindruckt von der Bildsprache seiner Arbeiten nahm sie bereits kurze Zeit später den Kontakt zu ihm auf und schlug ein gemeinsames Projekt vor: ein Performance-Video zu dem damals just fertig gestellten Song „In Harm’s Way“, für den Palmers Musik-Buddie Jherek Bischoff Streicher-Arrangements besorgt hatte.
Und wie so oft konnte sich Amanda Palmer für dieses neuste künstlerische Unterfangen auf ihre via Patreon und andere soziale Medien reaktivierten Fans und Unterstützer verlassen. Finanziert via Crowdfunding, drehten die Musikerin und Performance-Künstler Azcona das Musikvideo zu „In Harm’s Way“ gemeinsam mit vielen freiwilligen Laien-Darstellern, die dem Aufruf der Social-Media-Aktivistin gefolgt waren, an einem Strand im spanischen Tarragona. Das fünfeinhalbminütige Ergebnis spricht für sich. Und sorgt – gerade in Verbindung mit der Musik – für mehrere dicke Klöße im Hals…
Wer übrigens meint, dass Palmer das Thema der Flüchtlingskrise – gerade von ihrem vermeintlichen Elfenbeinturm im fernen US-amerikanischen Boston heraus – zur fixen Selbstprofilierung nutzen würde, dem sei mit auf den Weg gegeben, dass die umtriebige Musikerin unter anderem (sie steht etwa in stetigem Kontakt zu diversen NGOs) im Frühjahr 2017 auf dem Rückweg von einer Tournee durch Australien – gemeinsam mit ihrem mittlerweile zweijährigen Sohn Ash – ein Flüchtlingscamp im griechischen Lesvos besuchte, um sich selbst ein Bild von der Situation zu machen.

„while the headlines blare on about the distractions du jour, we are now witnessing the highest levels of displacement **on record**. an unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from their homes. among them are nearly 22.5 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18. this past spring of 2017, i traveled to lesvos, greece, where i worked with a small NGO and saw the continual plight of families and children living in limbo with a scarcity of help and resources while the world marches on without paying attention.
meanwhile, i worked on this song recorded in tasmania, australia, with generous assistance from the MONA museum and began an brainstorm and partnership with the spanish performance artist abel azcona. we recruited dozens of volunteers from across spain, france, the UK and elsewhere in europe to take part in the performance. these volunteers weren’t professional actors, they simply answered our call and wanted to loan their time and hearts to this cause. the video was filmed on location in tarragona, spain. we cannot thank the volunteers enough for their travel, time and generosity in making this clip.
