Song des Tages: Belle and Sebastian – „If They’re Shooting At You“

Kriegsleid lässt niemand kalt – und daher keinerlei Raum für Neutralität. Wie so viele andere Künstler*innen zeigen dieser Tage nun auch die Indie-Popper von Belle and Sebastian Flagge. So hat die Band aus dem schottischen Glasgow einen Benefiz-Song für die Ukraine geteilt.

Für „If They’re Shooting At You“ haben Belle and Sebastian, deren neues Studioalbum „A Bit Of Previous“ im Mai erscheinen wird, zudem mit Fotograf*innen zusammengearbeitet und zeigen im dazugehörigen Musikvideo Facetten der russischen Invasion und des damit ausgelösten Krieges in der Ukraine. Alle Einnahmen der Single werden an das Rote Kreuz gespendet. Frontmann und Gründungsmitglied Stuart Murdoch äußerte sich in einem Statement, welches nachfolgend zu finden ist, zur Entstehung des Songs und solidarisierte sich mit den Menschen in der Ukraine: „Wir hatten einen Song mit dem Titel ‚If They’re Shooting At You‘, in dem es darum geht, verloren und gebrochen zu sein und von Gewalt bedroht zu werden. […] Wir sind solidarisch mit den Menschen in der Ukraine und hoffen, dass ihr Schmerz und ihr Leid so bald wie möglich beendet werden können“. Außerdem fordert er die Fans der Band zu weiteren Spenden auf.

„When the situation in Ukraine first started to happen it became clear that the lives of the people there, and probably ‘ours’ too, were never going to be the same. The band had just started rolling out tracks for our new album, and it all felt a bit silly to be honest.
We had one track called ‘If They’re Shooting At You’, it’s a song about being lost, broken and under threat of violence. The key line is ‘if they’re shooting at you kid you must be doing something right.’
We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and hope that their pain and suffering can be brought to a halt as soon as possible. 
We got in touch with various photographers and creatives in Ukraine and they generously said that we could put their pictures to music. In creating this we aspire to show a hopeful, defiant side, as well as bringing an awareness to the plight of the people there. 
We think any way in which we can get behind Ukraine – politically, culturally, practically, spiritually – it must all add up in the end. Together we have to do what it takes to help Ukraine beat this tyranny.

Song des Tages #2: Neck Deep – „Torn“

Spätestens seit den Suiziden von Soundgarden-Frontmann Chris Cornell oder Linkin Park-Sänger Chester Bennington im vergangenen Jahr beschäftigt das Thema psychische Gesundheit intensiv auch die Musikwelt…

Das in Los Angeles beheimatete Label Hopeless Records leistet nun seinen Beitrag zur Aufklärung: Mit der am 9. November erscheinenden Compilation „Songs That Saved My Life“ wollen das Label und die beteiligten Künstler Aufmerksamkeit auf das Thema lenken und verschiedene Hilfsorganisationen unterstützen. Die Einnahmen aus dem Verkauf der Platte gehen an die Hilfsorganisationen Crisis Text Line, Hope For The Day, The Trevor Project und To Write Love On Her Arms, die sich allesamt für psychische Gesundheit und Suizidprävention einsetzen.

Passend dazu haben die beteiligten Musiker Songs für Coverversionen ausgewählt, die ihnen durch schwere Zeiten geholfen haben. So interpretieren Against Me! „People Who Died“ von der Jim Carroll Band neu, Taking Back Sunday nehmen sich den Smashing Pumpkins-Klassiker „Bullet With Butterfly Wings“ vor, und Dance Gavin Dance covern die Third Eye Blind-College-Film-Hymne „Semi Charmed Life“.

Auch sonst finden sich mit Stücken von Death Cab For Cutie, R.E.M., The Postal Service oder – passenderweise – Linkin Park zahlreiche Songs aus dem (mal mehr, mal minder) Indie- und Alternative-Rock-Kosmos auf der Compilation. Ebenjene kann man bereits auf der Webseite zum Album vorbestellen.

Als Vorgeschmack gibt es – Vorsicht, ohrwurmiger Karaoke-Klassiker! – Neck Deeps recht original interpretierte Version des von Natalie Imbruglia populär gemachten Ednaswap-Songs „Torn“ zu hören – und um’s rund zu machen, hat die britische Pop-Punk-Band dafür sogar das Video des 1997er Hits nachgestellt…
