Song des Tages: Seafood – „Porchlight“

Remember Seafood, anyone? Zwischen 1998 und 2006 veröffentlichte die englische Band um Sänger David Line fünf recht tolle Alben mit Songs, die mal nostalgietrunken knietief im Neunziger-Indierock der Duftmarken Sebadoh, Sonic Youth und Pavement wateten, mal britischen Landmännern wie The Electric Soft Parade, Idlewild oder (den frühen) Snow Patrol nacheiferten, mal zauberhaft melancholische Folk-Schlummertrünke servierten. 2009 – drei Jahre nach ihrem Schwanengesangswerk „Paper Crown King“ – zog die Band, welche zuletzt aus David Line (Gesang, Gitarre), Caroline Banks (Schlagzeug, Backgroundgesang) und Kevin Penney (Gitarre) bestand, die Reißleine, um sich fortan anderen Projekten zu widmen. Schade. Im Übrigen ebenso wie der Fakt, dass die Seafood’schen Langspieler, von denen euch etwa auch „Surviving The Quiet“ oder „As The Cry Flows“ (mit seinem Instant-Überhit „Good Reason„) ans Hörerherz gelegt seien, auch eine Dekade nach dem Band-Split Geheimtipps bleiben…

Dass ich 2019 jedoch keineswegs der einzige bin, der sich selig an Seafood zurück erinnert, zeigt das US-Sci-Fi-Drama „Starfish„, bei dem Drehbuchautor/Regisseur A.T. White mit „Porchlight“ eines der früheren Stücke der Londoner Indierocker für dessen Soundtrack verwendete (nebst Stücken von Why?, Sparklehorse, Grandaddy, Jeniferever, 65daysofstatic oder Sigur Rós). Worum es in dem mit kleinem Budget wirkungsvoll in Szene gesetzten Film geht? Ich zitiere an dieser Stelle einmal kino-zeit.de: „Eigentlich hatte Aubrey gehofft, das kleine Städtchen, das sie einst verließ, nie wieder betreten zu müssen. Doch nun führt sie der Tod einer Freundin zurück  - und das just zu dem Zeitpunkt, als eine Apokalypse die Welt heimsucht. Aber gibt es vielleicht doch noch Hoffnung für die Welt? Dies suggeriert zumindest ein Mixtape, dass sie in der Wohnung von Grace findet. Und darauf steht: ‚This mixtape will save the world!‘ Alles nur Zufall?“

Zwar sollte in den knapp 100 Filmminuten nicht allzuviel Action erwarten (im Gegenteil – zu einem Großteil seiner Zeit stimmt der Streifen eher introspektiv-melancholische Töne an). Viel eher pendelt sich „Starfish“ – seinem recht ratlos-offenen Ende zum Trotz – irgendwo zwischen genreverwandten Indie-Erfolgen wie „A Quiet Place“, „Bird Box“, „The Signal“, “Annihilation” oder „Cloverfield“ ein, während auch der noch immer auf einer steten Hype-Welle surfende Netflix-Serien-Hit „Stranger Things“ ebenfalls ums mysteriös-monströse Eck lugt… Keinesfalls ein klarer Fall von Muss-man-sehen, aber vor allem Virginia Gardner, die den Film (zwangsläufig) beinahe als One-Woman-Show trägt, ist eine echte Entdeckung…
