Oha! Wenn eine kanadische Band 2016 ein „Amerika“ (mit einem „k“ – Obacht!) betiteltes Stück an den Anfang ihres neuen Albums stellt, können da – so lässt sich zunächst vermuten – eigentlich nur zwei Intentionen dahinter stecken: Hurra-Glorifizierung oder politisches Rundumbashing der US of A…
Nun, ganz so einfach machen es einem Wintersleep nicht. Zwar waren und sind die Indierocker aus dem kanadischen Halifax, Nova Scotia immer recht nah am Zeitgeist dran, als eindeutig politisch konnte man sie jedoch bislang auf keinem ihrer Songs verrorten.
Und daran wird sich auch auf dem mittlerweile sechsten, im März erschienenen Album „The Great Detachment
„My brother Jon sends me stuff he thinks I should read and over the past 5-6 years has got me into a lot early American writers like Emerson, Hawthorne and Walt Whitman.
I had the riff/lick for this song and was going through the chords for it for a while with a general melody in mind, but not a ton of lyrics. It had this Americana quality to it and reminded me of something by The Band or Neil Young or Richard Thompson, so it was just a fun little thing to play around with initially.
I came across a Whitman poem called ‘America’ at some point during this period and a bunch of other stuff from the Leaves of Grass [book] and the enthusiasm and hope Whitman had for “America” as a place and an idea really struck me. I guess that was where the song started lyrically.
We recorded it live off the floor with everyone in the room, amps cranked and all the different instruments playing off each other. It was pretty chaotic and fun – I’m sure it was a headache to mix.“
Das Musikvideo zum Stück wiederum fällt da ein klein wenig politischer – aber auch im wahrten Wortsinn fantastischer – aus. Regisseur Scott Cudmore, der sich in der Vergangenheit bereits für Videos von Bands wie Fucked Up, Rural Alberta Advantage, The Wooden Sky oder Bahamas verantwortlich zeichnete, dehnt die eingängige Dreieinhalb-Minuten-Nummer auf kurzfilmige sieben Minuten aus und lässt im Grunde einfach gehaltene Bilder Bände sprechen – von den (gesponnenen) Anfängen der amerikanischen Kultur per se, von Liebe und Familie im Hinterland, von Hoffnung, Glaube und Apokalypse. Dass inmitten der Aufnahmen ein Auszug aus einer Rede des tumben, jedoch bislang erfolgreichen US-Präsidentschaftskandidaten Donald Trump eingeflochten wurde, spricht mit dessen oberflächlichen „Make America great again!“-Floskeln dabei eine deutlichere Sprache als der Wintersleep-Song selbst. Denn auch 2016 mögen es Paul Murphy und Co. gern gewohnt enigmatisch…
