Das Musikbusiness hat schon viele Talente verschlungen und nie wieder ausgespuckt. In ihrer neuen Single „How Not To Drown“ erzählen CHVRCHES von den dunklen Seiten des Geschäfts. Dafür bekommen sie Unterstützung von niemand Geringerem als The Cure-Zauselbandkopf Robert Smith. Mit dem Song kündigt das Trio aus dem schottischen Glasgow ganz nebenbei auch ihr viertes Album „Screen Violence“ an.
Wie der Titel schon andeutet, ist der neuste Song aus der Elektropop-Schmiede von Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook und Martin Doherty ziemlich melancholisch geraten. „Tell me how / It’s better if I make no sound / I will never escape these doubts / I wasn’t dead when they found me / Watch as they pull me down“, singen Mayberry und Robert Smith gemeinsam im Refrain. Musikalisch scheint „How Not To Drown“ von den Achtziger- und Neunzigerjahren inspiriert zu sein – was sich bei einem Feature des Frontmanns von The Cure natürlich perfekt anbietet.
In ihrer letzten Single „He Said She Said“ hatten sich die Schott*innen mit den oft genug ungleichen Maßstäben der Gesellschaft beschäftigt. Jetzt folgt der etwas tiefere Blick in die psychischen Abgründe, mit dem die Band laut eigener Aussage nun größere, wichtige Botschaften in ihre Songs packen möchte. „How Not To Drown“ erzählt vom viel zu hohen Druck und dem Schmutz unter der glitzernden Oberfläche der Entertainment-Branche: „You promised the world and brought me it hanging from a string / Stuck it in my mouth, into my throat, told me to sing“. Während die Stimmen von Mayberry und Smith nach ihren Solo-Strophen im gemeinsamen Refrain ineinander verschmelzen, flehen die beiden nach einem Ausweg aus der erdrückenden Situation: „Tell me how it’s better when the sun goes down / We will never escape this town“.
CHVRCHES-Sängerin Lauren Mayberry beschreibt in „How Not To Drown“ laut eigener Aussage den einzigen Moment in ihrem Leben, in dem ihr bisher Zweifel über ihre Karriere aufkamen: „These lyrics are about a time when I just wanted to disappear, and the only time I ever thought about quitting the band. I felt like I was in over my head at the deep end and not sure how to get back.“
Parallel zur Singleveröffentlichung haben CHVRCHES außerdem den Nachfolger zum 2018 erschienenen Album „Love Is Dead“ angekündigt. Er soll den Titel „Screen Violence“ tragen und am 27. August erscheinen. „Screen Violence“ war in der engeren Auswahl, als das Trio vor zehn Jahren einen Namen suchte. Inmitten der Corona-Pandemie und den mittlerweile fast obligatorischen endlosen Videochats bekam dieser Begriff für Mayberry, Cook und Doherty nun eine ganz neue Bedeutung…
