Colson Baker, der – zumindest in den US of A – besser bekannt unter seinem street name Machine Gun Kelly sein sollte, und Blink-182-Schlagzeuger Travis Barker haben ein Cover des Rage Against The Machine-Klassikers „Killing In The Name“ veröffentlicht. Motiviert wurden die beiden Musiker hierbei von der„Black Lives Matter“-Bewegung, die nach George Floyds Tod durch unverhältnismäßige Polizeigewalt erneut weltweit Demonstrant*innen auf der Straße versammelt und sich lautstark gegen den leider noch immer grassierenden Rassismus speziell in den derzeit gar nicht mal so Vereinigten Staaten (aber freilich auch hierzulande) stark macht.
Die recht nah am unkaputtbaren Original gehaltene Coverversion selbst entstand, nachdem MGK, der in den letzten Jahren vor allem als Rapper und Gelegenheitsschauspieler (etwa in „Birdbox“) in Erscheinung trat, und Barker gemeinsam an einer ebenjener Demos in Los Angeles teilgenommen hatten. „Sie schrieben den Song 1992. Das ist 28 Jahre her und jedes Wort trifft immer noch zu“, erklärt Machine Gun Kelly die fast schon offensichtlich folgerichtige Songwahl via Twitter. Den allseits bekannten Textzeilen “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!” fügt Machine Gun Kelly die entschlossenen Worte “To the protesters in these streets / Fight the system! / Fuck the system! / We will be heard!” hinzu.
Im dazugehörigen, in schwarz-weiß gehaltenen Clip sieht man die beiden Musiker, die Schilder mit Aufschriften wie “STOP ARRESTING PROTESTORS! ARREST KILLER COPS!” und “NO JUSTICE. NO PEACE.” in den Händen halten und jüngst bereits den ein oder anderen Song gemeinsam aufgenommen hatten, im Studio neben Zusammenschnitten von aktuellen Protesten gegen Rassismus und Polizeigewalt. „End systematic racism“, heißt es am Ende des Videos – welch‘ frommer Wunsch, für den sich in den Neunzigern bereits Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello und Co. stark gemacht haben…
