Schon ungewöhnlich, dass (Kurz)Filme über historische Ereignisse erscheinen, während jenes Ereignis noch im vollen Gange ist (oder wir vielleicht sogar noch ganz am Anfang von selbigem stehen)…
So ist „Distance“ einer der ersten Kurzfilme, welcher die aktuelle Coronavirus-Situation und ihre Auswirkungen thematisch aufgreift. Zwar mag man an mancher Stelle ein wenig am knapp viertelstündigen Film von Autor und Regisseur Jesse Edwards, den dieser zu großen Teilen im März diesen Jahres in Isolation drehte, herum kriteln, mag dem Kurz-Streifen sein Hollywood-likes dezent überlaufenes Fass an Pathos und (leisem) Drama ebenso ankreiden wie den Versuch, etwas Filmisches aus einer Momentaufnahme von etwas heraus, das wohl keiner von uns aktuell so genau einzuschätzen weiß, zu schaffen (so fehlen im Film etwa die Atemschutzmasken, die wir mittlerweile bei jedem Einkauf zu tragen verpflichtet sind). Am Ende jedoch überzeugt „Distance“ mit durchaus gutem Storytelling sowie der ein oder anderen zeitlos wichtigen Botschaft, für welche es im Grunde weder einen Notstand noch eine Pandemie benötigt…

We need storytelling that will remind people that even in the darkest hour, we can and will get through this, together. There is hope. There is love. And even if at a distance, we have each other.
This motion picture was written, produced & filmed within a short window during March 2020. The filming operated within complete compliance of the State of Tennessee, US Federal Government mandates and CDC recommendations around COVID-19 best practices. Production followed volunteer, micro limited crew & cast footprint, social distancing and strict clean set protocols. The filmmaker’s acknowledge the threat posed by the spread of COVID-19 is real, alarming and should be taken very seriously. Strict precautions were thoroughly evaluated and enforced to ensure a safe set.
