Song des Tages: Christian Lee Hutson – „Northsiders“

Erinnert mich an Elliott Smith. – Es gibt wohl kaum ein größeres Kompliment, das ich spontan verteilen könnte…

In der Tat gibt es jedoch im Fall von Christian Lee Hutson gleich mehrere weitere Überschneidungen, die den 28-jährigen Singer/Songwriter aus Los Angeles nun – glücklicherweise – in meine Playlist gespült haben: Zum einen war dieser unlängst mit Phoebe Bridgers und Conor Oberst und deren gemeinsamen Band-Projekt Better Community Oblivion Center auf Tour, spielte im Vorprogramm und als Gitarren-Sidekick – wie man hörte – eine recht solide Rolle. Zum anderen arbeitete Hutson mit Phoebe Bridgers als Co-Songwriter nicht nur an deren Song-Beiträgen zum – an dieser Stelle wärmstens ans Hörerherz gelegenen, da großartigen – Better Community Oblivion Center-Albumdebüt, sondern auch an Stücken, die die 24-jährige Indie-Senkrechtstarterin unlängst zur All-Female-Mini-Supergroup boygenius (schließlich zählen zu der noch Julien Baker und Lucy Dacus) beitrug.

Und so ist es kaum verwunderlich, dass sich Bridgers bei Christian Lee Hutson revanchierte und ihrerseits mit „Northsiders“ ein Stück ihres Kreativpartners produzierte. Die simpel gehaltene Akustikgitarre-meets-Streicher-Ballade, welche der erste Vorbote eines neuen Albums (dem ersten seit „Yeah Okay, I Know“ von 2014) sein soll und an dessen Fertigstellung auch Nathaniel Walcott (Bright Eyes) beteiligt war, ist ein wunderschönes Lamento an unbeschwerte Jugendtage, als alles noch einfach erschien, die Tage und Nächte endlos und alle Wege offen. Im Text blitzen dabei immer wieder Erinnerungsfetzen an ebenjene Zeit auf, bevor alles (s)ein jähes Ende findet: „I read an article about the accident / Probably reaching for cigarettes / And missed the brake lights up ahead / I hope it was an instant death / Sometimes I imagine us way down the line / Getting fat somewhere in the countryside / It’s crazy how things shake out sometimes / But maybe that’s enough magic for me / Nothing’s going to change it now.“

Man darf durchaus gespannt sein, ob sich auf Christian Lee Hutsons mit prominenter Beteiligung entstandenen kommendem Solo-Album mehr Stücke dieser Smith’schen Güteklasse wiederfinden werden…
