Song des Tages: The Beths – „Not Running“

Texte über Herzschmerz und gute Laune versprühende Musik schließen sich keinesfalls gegenseitig aus. Das gilt nicht erst seit Evan Dando und seinen Lemonheads, sondern schon – zumindest gefühlt – immer, schließlich ist die Popmusik seit eh und je voll von diesen kleinen, fiesen Gute-Laune-Abgründigkeiten (zumindest, wenn man nicht gerade auf all die Ohohohoh-Stadion-Coldplays schielt)…

Das beweisen nun auch The Beths. Ob’s wohl mit der sonnenbeschienenen Herkunft zu tun hat? Immerhin ist das im vergangenen August erschienene Albumdebüt „Future Me Hates Me“ der unlängst zum Trio geschrumpften Band aus dem neuseeländischen Auckland prall gefüllt mit zackig-melodiös dahin dengelnden Indierock-Songs, denen Frontfrau Elizabeth Stokes textlich die richtige Würze verleiht. „If there is a record / For most hours wasted / Least worthy reason / To cry on a Thursday evening / I’m in the lead“ singt sie etwa im Opener „Great No One„. Textlich weniger düster und musikalisch noch bezaubernder kommt das Titelstück daher, in dem Stokes ihr Gespür für verflucht eingängige Hooks unter Beweis stellt. Oder eben „Uptown Girl„, in dem die Sängerin dann eine Mission zu haben scheint: „I’m going out tonight / I’m going to drink the whole town dry“ – und zwar als trotzige Reaktion auf eine Trennung.

Aber wohl feinsten jedoch gelingt den ehemaligen Jazz-Studenten Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce und Benjamin Sinclair das trotzige „Not Running“ (welches sich im Übrigen auch unter ANEWFRIENDs liebsten Songs des vergangenen Jahres wiederfand): „Breathe aloud / I promise it won’t freak me out / I’m not running away / Awkward mouth / I wanna hear that broken sound / Tell me to stay / Oh, I’m not running away“ – Ich werde bleiben, selbst wenn’s hässlich wird. Ein Ohrwurm unter neun weiteren Albumkollegen zwar, aber selbst diesen einen trägt man wohl noch tagelang mit sich herum. Bissig, tief traurig, aufrichtig. Der nahezu perfekte Soundtrack für sonnige Wehmut aller Art, mit Pop-Punk gewordenem hymnischem Kurzweil-Indierock in der Rückhand. Me likes.
